Mathematics is a fundamental part of life, yet every one of us has a unique relationship with learning and understanding the subject. Working with numbers may inspire confidence in our abilities or provoke anxiety and trepidation. Stanford researcher, mathematics education professor, and the leading expert on math learning Dr. Jo Boaler argues that our differences are the key to unlocking our greatest mathematics potential.

A message from ATMIM President Bob Knittle
Dear ATMIM Members,
As I recall a colleague saying, “…and so, we begin again”. What a wonderful opportunity to explore and devise new ideas – to find support with colleagues, and build relationships with your students. How could ATMIM provide you with other ideas?
We approach Thanksgiving, with this in mind. What gifts have we received, that we are thankful for, and what challenges do we have that help guide us to new growth? Please check out the ATMIM website and see all the opportunities being offered to our members this year. Do you have a talent in your classroom that might help other teachers, please don’t hesitate to sign up to be a speaker at the ATMIM Conference in March (proposals due December 13 th ).
Often, we ask students to take risks. Many Districts are moving towards “digital” math supports, and students are often averse to using the programs, as it really exposes them to what they know and are ready to learn. Often, we as math leaders, fear the same – will the digital data demonstrate our weaknesses, and what we need to improve?
If you find yourself in need of any professional support, please join our ATMIM opportunities. If you are interested, we would love you to join our Board, we would love to have you. Get involved, and don’t stay silent in your classroom. Get out – find some research to connect to, and meet new people. You never know what you might find out, and how you can increase student learning – just by trying something new!
We are certainly looking forward to an amazing 24-25 year.
Peace,
Bob Knittle
ATMIM President
