ATMNE Conference Featured Speaker
Julia Aguirre
The Impact of Identity in K–12 Mathematics: Rethinking Equity-Based Practices is a compelling expanded edition of the groundbreaking work focused on grades K–8. Here, the authors delve deeper into the intricate relationship between mathematics education and student identity, extending the conversation to the high school context.
This revised and expanded volume explores how teaching practices influence students’ perceptions of themselves as mathematics learners, emphasizing the need for teachers to engage in critical reflection and embrace equity-based practices. It addresses the challenges and inequities in the current education system, exacerbated by political and social turmoil and calls for a transformative approach to mathematics teaching.

A message from ATMIM President Bob Knittle
Hello ATMIM Membership –
We are so excited with the activities available to our members this year. Our Board truly went out of their way to provide math and stem events. We will wrap up our year, with our in-person ATMIM Conference. Please continue to look through out website and participate, share, or be vulnerable.
We have provided a Book Study group (for close to 50 members), a tabling event at the Mass STEM Fair (for over 250 people), a visit to the Christa McAuliffe Center to work on a simulated mission (for close to 20 members), and have just received submissions for our first Teacher Mini Grants (to be awarded soon). Please remind your Senior Math Students, that three scholarships are available and they simply need to complete a Google Survey.
Our Spring ATMIM Conference “Breaking Boundaries; Beyond the Limits of Mathematics”, will have their keynote by Deborah Schifter and Susan Jo Russell. This conference has sold out for the past two years, and we expect the same this year, as we have amazing speakers. Please save March 20, and join us at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester for this outstanding conference. Registration is now open!
Finally, ATMIM is the host for this year’s regional math conference of ATMNE (our six New England affiliates). We will host the ATMNE Conference “Mathematics Without Limits” in Marlborough, MA on October 30-31, 2025. The call for speaker proposals is now out.
All of these events, could not happen without the talented, and tireless work of our Board Members. They work in schools each day and dedicate one evening a month to our Board meetings. We hope you would consider joining our Board, as elections will be held this Spring.
Thank you for making a difference in the lives of your students, and in the lives of the math professionals around you. Please refer to our website and get involved. Hope to see you soon!
Peace,
Bob Knittle
ATMIM President
