Message from ATMIM President
Naomi Dupre-Edelman

Hello ATMIM Community,

I hope you’re staying warm and that you and your families were able to enjoy last week’s beautiful snowfall. Our favorite groundhog has called for six more weeks of winter—so keep those cozy layers close!

With snow still on my mind, I’ve been thinking about how weather gives us such authentic opportunities for mathematical exploration. Tracking patterns, noticing changes, making predictions—these are all wonderful ways for students to experience math as something real and relevant. I’ve included an NCTM article, “Fostering Mathematics Engagement Through Citizen Science,” from the June 2025 issue of Mathematics Teacher. It highlights how a fifth‑grade team used a weather‑focused community model to connect math and science in meaningful ways. I hope you’ll take a moment to read it and think about how similar real‑world experiences might spark curiosity in your own classroom or school community this winter.

As we look toward spring, keep an eye out for new ATMIM happenings. We have a special event coming up on March 19th that I’m excited to share more about in this newsletter—it’s something a little different, and we truly hope to see you there. Your feedback and ideas always matter to us, so please don’t hesitate to reach out, or explore this month’s board opportunities if you’re interested in getting involved.

With MCAS season approaching, I also want to remind you of the resources DESE offers, including practice tests and the digital library of released items dating back to 2019. You can find all that and more here. If you find something particularly helpful, consider sharing it with a colleague—supporting one another makes this season easier for everyone.

Wishing you a warm and joyful February—only 46 days until spring!
