Message from ATMIM President

Wishing a Warm and Healthy Summer!

Many Districts are getting to their last days, and some have already dismissed for the last time. Still others, have more days to come (while some work all year). This has been an amazing year, and on behalf of ATMIM, and I want to thank each of you for making this such a wonderfully productive experience.

We hosted three webinars, we took part in a book study (some were in multiple) and we hosted a sold-out in person conference. We as an ATMIM team, are committed to supporting all math teacher leaders in the development of your learning opportunities.

Some of us are reading books as refreshment of ideas, or books that take our minds away. Reading, is such a comfortable approach to helping students – because they actually help us develop problem-solving capabilities. Can you predict what will happen in the story, or forecast how one scenario will impact another? These skills, while connected to the Math Practice Standards – are so important for our students to develop as critical thinkers.

Thank you for a wonderful year – for helping us plan for the future. Please contact any Board Member (find us on https://atmim.wildapricot.org/) and let us know how you see Math as being “unlimited” in the ways we impact and connect with our students.

Let’s be strong together. Looking forward to meeting you along the pathway.

Peace,
Bob Knittle

Summer Reading Recommendations from ATMIM Board Members

Research Study Opportunity

Join other Teachers in the Math By Example research study!

WestEd is currently enrolling 4th and 5th grade teachers to implement Math By Example, a flexible, easy-to-use learning resource. The program requires minimal preparation and fits with any existing mathematics curriculum. Participating teachers will receive a stipend of up to $800 for their participation during the 2024-2025 school year, and full and supported access to MathByExample workbooks and an online platform.

A promising strategy for confronting stubborn misconceptions is for students to study both correct and incorrect solutions to math problems. MathByExample materials were created to help students learn more effectively by explaining fictitious students’ work.  To learn more about the MathByExample study, please click on this flyer or submit this interest form. Questions? Contact kschwin@wested.org

Membership

Please share with others, a membership is a great $20 gift to yourself. You will be a member of an entity of Math teacher leaders across the State. Over 400 members are able to share ideas and learn from each other through online Webinars, book groups and our Spring Conference. Remember, building and coach memberships are encouraged as well. Join membership through our ATMIM website.

ATMIM Educator Awards

The Father B award is in memory of Reverend Stanley. This is an award to honor the commitment and excellence of teachers of mathematics. The recipient of the 2024 Father B Award is Norma Borenstein-Gordon. Norma is an outstanding teacher and leader in the math education community. Congratulations Norma!

Peg Kenney, a beloved mathematics professor at Boston College, had a particular interest in Number Theory, Discrete Mathematics, and Geometry. In order to honor Peg’s legacy, each year members of the ATMIM board will select an exemplary Massachusetts teacher to give a content-rich presentation in one of these three areas of mathematics. The 2024 Peg Kenney award was given to Susan Weiss. Congratulations Susan on a well deserved award!

After our conference, we have several volunteers hoping to become more involved. This is how you spread your voice, and build others perspectives. Anyone a webpage guru? Would love to have your help. Thanks for considering...

We also need helpers for not only the ATMIM Conference in March of 2025, we will also need helpers as we will host the ATMNE Conference in Marlborough, MA during October of 2025. Your help will be appreciated!
