NCTM Releases New Position Statement on Changing the Professional Culture of Teaching Mathematics

The culture of teaching mathematics must shift from coursework being the gatekeeper to advanced mathematics and career aspirations to all educators valuing the community and integrating that knowledge into mathematics teaching and learning. If educators collaborate and investigate their personal beliefs and teaching practices, they can improve classroom experiences where mathematics is more relevant to students' lives and, as a result, students will see themselves and their peers as powerful mathematical thinkers and doers.

Mathematics Without Limits

A message from ATMIM President

Bob Knittle

Hello ATMIM Membership –

As I wrap up my two years as ATMIM President, I clear the way for new vision and excitement. Naomi Dupre Edleman will be a wonderful next voice. Each year we try to move our membership to share with each other, and provide ideas that are classroom ready. If you’vetaken part in our activities, hopefully you have found some useful tools.

We have a talented and productive volunteer group, that design ideas for professional learningand sharing – that are designed to engage you in some capacity. Did you get involved, did you bring a friend along, or did you “sit this one out”?

I’m reading a book titled “How to Focus Your Teaching on What Matters Most” – not a math book, yet it starts with this question: “What is your Everest, and what do you hope that your work will amount to this year?” Consider this as you refresh this summer. Is Math a series of steps, or is it a chance to unlock learning – is it a wrote process, or a chance to discover? Let’s make sure we are assisting all students to unlock learning, and discover the love of mathematics. How will you build the culture of learning in your classroom to be engaging for all?

Please don’t forget to sign up for the ATMNE Math Conference October 30-31, where we are hoping for 600 Math teacher leaders to be in attendance, participating in nearly 92 different sessions. Come up for a day – come up for two days. It will certainly be worth the ride to Marlborough Mass.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of your students, and in the lives of the math professionals around you. Please refer to our website and get involved. Hope to see you soon!

Peace, and thanks for being involved.

Bob Knittle

ATMIM President

What are ATMIM Board Members Reading               This Summer?

Dave Stuart Jr.’s work is centered on a simple belief: all students and teachers can flourish. These 6 Things is all about streamlining your practice so that you’re teaching smarter, not harder, and kids are learning, doing, and flourishing in ELA and content-area classrooms.

This manual is written for every possible educator combination―not simply general educators. You'll find sections on everything from co-teaching in literacy and speech-language therapy to special education and technology so that, no matter what subject matter or expertise, you'll be prepared to co-teach.

The first book in CWA Gold Dagger Award-winning British espionage series starring a team of MI5 agents united by one common bond: They've screwed up royally and will do anything to redeem themselves.

Congratulations to our 2025 scholarship recipients!

Steve Yurek Award - Paige Meyette (McCann Technical High School)

J. Bryan Sullivan Achievement Award and Scholarship - Michael Holloran(Methuen High School )
